New Cell: Samsung Intensity

I got a new cellphone, Samsung SCH-u450.

It was cute, free, and pleasantly minimal in functionality… I just love the keybad, love the feedback of a button, love texting like a 14yo girl.

NEway, I was due for an upgrade through Verizon Wireless, and picked this one which was free (after mail-rebate). It is a basic candy-bar phone, with a side-slide-out QWERTY keypad, and a quite basic OS. I got 3 free months of a $10 data package, so I can browse the web (only sites mobile-coded) and also check my gmail. Hey, that’s good for free.

My quest for customization revealed several issues.

1) Not Mac compatible, which manifests in failures to connect via both Bluetooth, and USB.

2) It does have a microSD slot, so I can shuttle images and other files from computer to phone. Wallpapers are 176w x 184h px by the way. I have found saving data between phone memory v. card memory a little tricky, some settings disappear when you remove the card.

3) I can gmail a ‘Multimedia MSG’ to (my number) xxx-xxx-xxxx@vzwpix.com, with media files attached. On that note, I have been scouring Audacity tutorials trying to figure out the best filters to apply to a full .mp3 so that it sounds decent as a custom-edited polyphonic ringtone… which I KNOW is possible because I bought one off that stupid VZ store and it sounded pretty clear at loudest, lyrics and all. I’ve tried normalize/equilize/hi-pass etc.

I used the following resources to create custom .mp3 ringtones (haven’t found a decent quality yet).

i think i might actually forward the recommendation to keep your ringtone track under 30sec, 20 to be safe… this actually seems to be something i can control for with beneficial results
